When I first met Livy and Misty (Livy's Mom), they were looking for any opportunity to help Livy adjust to a completely different life after sustaining a traumatic brain injury (TBI) in an ATV accident that left her visually impaired. Like many young adults facing significant life changes, she had to relearn everyday tasks and discover new ways to accomplish goals we all take for granted. Despite these challenges, Livy never lost her determination or her love for learning.

Today, I have the privilege of working with Livy as a participant in the MAPS Program, and watching her growth over the past year has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my career.

Now in her second year of MAPS, Livy has reached an exciting milestone—she recently graduated from high school and has been accepted to Dyersburg State Community College, where she plans to study Agriculture – Plant & Soil Science. Her passion for plants and gardening became evident after the accident, and she is eager to turn that passion into a career.

One of the greatest goals throughout Livy's MAPS journey has been increasing her independence at home. Through the program, she has received several pieces of enabling technology designed specifically to help her navigate daily life safely and confidently. These include a voice-activated microwave paired with an Alexa Pro device, a voice-controlled air fryer, a video doorbell, an induction countertop burner with accessible cookware, and other enabling technology that allows her to prepare meals, manage her home, and complete everyday tasks with much greater independence.

Perhaps one of the most exciting parts of Livy's story is "Livy's Lodge," the tiny home her family lovingly built on their property. More than just a place to live, Livy's Lodge represents trust, confidence, and the belief that she can thrive independently. Inside her home, the enabling technology provided through the MAPS Program has transformed daily routines into opportunities for independence. Instead of relying on others for many everyday activities, Livy is developing the skills and confidence to complete them on her own using enabling technology.

Having the opportunity moving forward to watch Livy explore new recipes, safely prepare meals, manage household tasks, and embrace independent living has been inspiring. Every success, no matter how small, has been built upon the last, and her confidence continues to grow.

As Livy prepares to begin college, she is not only pursuing an education but also building a future centered around her passion for agriculture and horticulture. Her story is a reminder that disability does not define potential. With determination, family support, innovative technology, and the opportunities provided through the MAPS Program, Livy continues to break barriers and achieve goals that once seemed out of reach.

Working with Livy has been a true privilege. Her resilience, positive attitude, and willingness to embrace new challenges serve as an inspiration to everyone around her. I do not doubt that as she begins this next chapter at Dyersburg State Community College and continues to build her independence at Livy's Lodge, she will accomplish even greater things.

Livy's journey demonstrates exactly what the MAPS Program is designed to achieve: empowering individuals through person-centered planning, enabling technology, and individualized support so they can live more independently, pursue their dreams, and build meaningful futures. I cannot wait to see where her journey takes her next.
