What Are Pre-Employment Transition Services?
There are several terms related to the transition process that might be familiar—IEP, transition, goals, 504 plan, accommodations, and advocacy, just to name a few. But what about the term “Pre-ETS?” That term may not be as familiar to many.
So, what exactly are Pre-ETS? Pre-ETS stands for Pre-Employment Transition Services. This is a federal program designed for students with documented disabilities between the ages of 14 and 22. Through this program, students will gain valuable life and job skills while exploring and planning for their futures beyond high school. Teachers and school administrators play a vital role in helping students transition out of high school. Therefore, Pre-ETS specialists work alongside those teachers to reinforce concepts and provide additional resources and support to students who may need extra help.
The Five Categories of Pre-ETS
Pre-ETS encompasses five key categories:
Job Exploration
Workplace Readiness Training
Work-Based Learning
Instruction in Self-Advocacy
Post-Secondary Education Counseling
When students enroll in Pre-ETS, they participate in various activities and lessons that address these five categories. Below are just a few examples of how Pre-ETS can benefit students:
Job Exploration
Career assessments can be conducted to help students explore careers that might be a good fit for them. This exploration is crucial in guiding students toward their future paths.
Workplace Readiness Training
Mock interviews may be conducted to allow students to practice and gain necessary workplace readiness skills. This training helps build confidence and prepares them for real job interviews.
Work-Based Learning
Students might run a bake sale during their lunch to gain real-life work experience through work-based learning. This hands-on experience is invaluable in understanding workplace dynamics.
Instruction in Self-Advocacy
Students can learn the importance of expressing their needs through self-advocacy instruction. This skill is essential for navigating both educational and professional environments.
Post-Secondary Education Counseling
Pre-ETS specialists may schedule local college tours so that students can learn more about college opportunities in their area. This exposure can inspire students to pursue higher education.
How to Get Involved with Pre-ETS
You might be wondering, “How can I or my child be involved in Pre-ETS?” The good news is that at The STAR Center, our Pre-ETS specialists serve both schools and individuals. If our specialists do not attend your school, feel free to contact either Marya Bailey (marya.bailey@star-center.org) or April Daniels (april.griffin@star-center.org) for more information.
To begin Pre-ETS services, the participant must be between the ages of 14 and 22. A permission form must be filled out, and we must have proof of disability (either through a doctor’s letter or IEP).
