2016 has come and gone. 2017 is here, and the Star Center is 29 years old. Do you remember turning 29? I remember that my family and I had recently moved to Oklahoma City and were not able to make it home for Christmas, due to 14” of snow. Many of you have 29th birthday recollections, but how many of you know a nonprofit that has celebrated its 29th birthday?
In a 2015 Inc.com article, the author reminds us that 96% of businesses fail within 10 years. The statistics for nonprofits are a little harder to discern, but regardless, a 29th birthday is to be celebrated. Following a year that was marked by transition in so many ways, consistency comes as a breath of fresh air.
The Star Center began with a very narrow focus: find resources to help George and Angela adapt to their loss of vision. From those first two, the reach has extended to over 1,500 individuals and families served each year. From placing more individuals with disabilities into jobs, to serving more children than ever before, the ripples left by George and Angela continue. The reach has continued to grow as we live out our mission; “To help ANY person with ANY disability realize their potential.”
We are so thankful for the outpouring of support for everything we do across this community. Jackson, TN is a special place to call home. We are looking for new ways to take what is special here and share it in other parts of the state. Our news and interest writers have really helped us spread our message to others, especially The Jackson Sun, WBBJ, WNWS 101.5, and Our Jackson Home.
I’m humbled to have led such an amazing organization for the last two years, and I want to give you a glimpse into what is to come. First of all, we are going to continue providing great service in all of the areas we are currently operating within. Second, our growth is stimulated by needs expressed specifically by members in our community.
Whether it is literacy, vision, employment, home care, assistive technology, or Art/Music Therapy, our team wakes up every day, striving to make the lives of others better. We could not do this without them, and I’m grateful for what The Star Center has done for so many families during our 29 years.
